Aviles Repeats as Supertech Maryland Champion

July 1, 2024

On Saturday, June 29, Manny Aviles of Travel Centers of America won the 2024 SuperTech Maryland Championship.  It was his second year in a row earning the top prize, having also won the event in 2023 (and finishing in 2nd place in 2022).  Manny also won the Electrical Skill Station and will now go on to compete at the national SuperTech competition in September.

35 technicians and students gathered at CAT North High School in Severn to compete in this annual test of technician skills.  Stations included brakes, preventive maintenance inspection, wheel end, fifth wheel, fasteners, engines, service information, electrical systems, and precision measuring. Technicians also completed a written test based on ASE’s standard practices.

2nd place went to John Kidd of Travel Centers of America.  Glenn Whisenand of G-Whiz Fabrications finished third.

The Futuretech Maryland champion was Connor Anderson from North American Trade Schools.

As part of the day, HDA Truck Pride - North America's largest independent provider of commercial motor vehicle parts and service – used the competition as a qualifier to determine which of its top two techs will go to the national event.  Winners were Luke Noyes and Eric Curler.

MMTA was also able to recognize a Virginia grand champion since there were several competing technicians from that state, which doesn't have its own competition.  The VA champion was Michael Wolffe of Fairfax County Department of Vehicle Services.

Congratulations also goes out to the first-place finishers in each skill station. Every station winner received a cash award and plaque. Thank you to all sponsors, volunteers, and equipment contributors who help put this event together. We couldn’t do it without you!
